چکیده
Large-scale coherent rolls are observed frequently in unstably stratified turbulent wall-bounded flows where they influence strongly the transport and mean flow properties. Here we address question of their genesis by means a linear stability analysis model Reynolds stresses is embedded operator. We use channel as testbed for analysis. show that onset large-scale convection associated to instability streamwise-uniform aspect ratio $A \approx 3\unicode{x2013}3.3$ when friction Richardson number exceeds $|Ri_{\tau,c}|=0.86$ . This corresponds critical Rayleigh numbers increase with approximately $Ra_c 0.04\,Re_b^{1.8}$ These results consistent those obtained recent direct numerical simulations performed same setting. It also found if not modelled operator used analysis, then predictions results.

A linear process in wall-bounded turbulent shear flows
A linear process in wall-bounded turbulent shear flows has been investigated through numerical experiments. It is shown that the linear coupling term, which enhances non-normality of the linearized Navier–Stokes system, plays an important role in fully turbulent—and hence, nonlinear —flows. Near-wall turbulence is shown to decay without the linear coupling term. It is also shown that near-wall ...
متن کاملShear-improved Smagorinsky model for large-eddy simulation of wall-bounded turbulent flows
A shear-improved Smagorinsky model is introduced based on recent results concerning shear effects in wall-bounded turbulence by Toschi et al. (2000). The Smagorinsky eddyviscosity is modified as νT = (Cs∆) (|S|−|〈S〉|): the magnitude of the mean shear |〈S〉| is subtracted to the magnitude of the instantaneous resolved strain-rate tensor |S|; here CS is the standard Smagorinsky constant and ∆ deno...
متن کاملFrom laminar plumes to organized flows: the onset of large-scale circulation in turbulent thermal convection
We report an experimental study on the onset of the large-scale coherent mean flow in Rayleigh–Bénard turbulent convection. Shadowgraph and particle image velocimetry techniques are used to visualize the motion of thermal plumes and measure the velocity of the plumes and of the ‘background’ flow field, as the fluid motion evolves from quiescent to steady state. The experiment reveals the dynami...
متن کاملLarge-scale finite-wavelength modulation within turbulent shear flows.
We show that turbulent "spirals" and "spots" observed in Taylor-Couette and plane Couette flow correspond to a turbulence-intensity modulated finite-wavelength pattern which in every respect fits the phenomenology of coupled noisy Ginzburg-Landau (amplitude) equations with noise. This suggests the existence of a long-wavelength instability of the homogeneous turbulence regime.
متن کاملShear-current effect in a turbulent convection with a large-scale shear.
The shear-current effect in a nonrotating homogeneous turbulent convection with a large-scale constant shear is studied. The large-scale velocity shear causes anisotropy of turbulent convection, which produces the mean electromotive force epsilon (W) proportional to W x J and the mean electric current along the original mean magnetic field, where W is the background mean vorticity due to the sh...
